Life coaching, explained

What does a life coach actually do?

It's a fair question. 'Life coach' can sound vague, or like someone who will tell you to manifest your dreams. Here's the honest version, from someone who does it.

A life coach helps you think clearly when your head is full. You bring whatever is on your mind: a decision, a change, a feeling that something isn't right. Together we make sense of it. I don't hand you answers. I help you find yours, and then help you act on them.

Most people don't need more advice. They've had plenty. What they need is space to hear themselves think, someone who listens without an agenda, and a bit of honest challenge when they're talking themselves out of what they want.

Common questions

The straight answers

What is a life coach?

A life coach is someone trained to help you get clear on what you want, notice what is getting in the way, and take steps that fit your life. Coaching looks forward. It is about where you are now and where you want to go, not about diagnosing or fixing you.

What does a life coach actually do in a session?

Mostly, we listen properly. We ask questions that help you hear your own thinking, reflect back patterns you might not see, and gently challenge the stories that keep you stuck. By the end you usually have more clarity and one or two small, realistic next steps.

Is a life coach the same as a therapist?

No. Therapy often explores the past and supports mental health conditions. Coaching focuses on the present and the future: decisions, confidence, direction and change. If something comes up that needs a therapist, a good coach will say so honestly.

What kind of things do people bring to coaching?

Feeling stuck. A big decision. A career change. Burnout. Rebuilding confidence after a hard season. Relationships with work, family or yourself. Wanting more from life without quite knowing what 'more' is. There is no issue too small or too messy.

How do I find the right life coach?

Look for someone you feel comfortable with, not just someone with a long list of letters after their name. Ask about their background, how they work and what a session looks like. Most good coaches offer a free chat first so you can see if it feels right.

How much does a life coach cost in the UK?

Prices vary widely, from around £50 to several hundred pounds per session, depending on the coach and what you're working on. You'll always know my rate before we book anything, and there is always a free, no-pressure chat first so we can both check it's a good fit.
